On Sunday night, Nina Davuluri was crowned Miss America. The 24-year-old was the first Indian-American to win the crown competing on the platform of “celebrating diversity through cultural competency.”
Unfortunately, the not everyone saw it that way. An ugly stream of racist responses erupted on Twitter in response to the Syracuse native’s victory. Here’s a brief sampling of some of the horrific responses to the aspiring medical student’s crowning courtesy of Public Shaming and BuzzFeed.
“9/11 was 4 days ago and she gets miss America?”
“Miss America is a terrorist. Whatever. It’s fine.”
“And the Arab wins Miss America. Classic.”
"I have to rise above that," Davuluri said of the ugly response on social media. "I always viewed myself as first and foremost American."
